Mixed Martial Arts (Hybrid Yaw-Yan Cubao)

Yaw-Yan, also called Sayaw ng Kamatayan or "Dance of Death" is a Filipino hybrid style of kickboxing developed by Napoleon Fernandez. Since its inception in the 1970s, it has dominated the kickboxing scene in the Philippines and has proven very effective against other stand-up fighting arts. (Wikipedia)

I joined Hybrid Yaw-Yan last 2010 in order to defend myself from bad people. I'm not an expert or anything but I pretty much learn everything from Sir Henry Kobayashi (CEO/trainer). I always sweat like a pig in all his warm up exercises. Imagine, it's just a warm-up exercise, what more if I finish the whole session? (without cheating of course!) I love mits training with Sir Henry because it's stress relieving. Like if I'm angry, I hit the mits harder. Seriously, it helps. ;)

Sir Henry kicking someone's ass

I stopped training in 2011 and went back to the gym late last year. This time, I attended Coach Jojo Anghang Tabang's class. He wants me to apply what I learned so he asked me to kick and punch him. He hit back but not too hard and this is what I got.

blisters!!!

I posted that photo on facebook and this is what he said, "Having blisters on your toes also shows that you're really twisting when you punch. Meaning you're doing it right." Dang! It was really painful! I have to use adhesive bandages whenever I go to work. Next time I'm going to use a muller tape.

Coach Jojo (he won the URCC University challenge)

I joined the fitness and circuit training after I got tired of kicking and boxing. It's perfect for those who want to burn calories and increase their metabolism. Here's a preview of what we do:

 pound pound
 horsey horsey
jump jump

Each session makes me feel like I'm in The Biggest Loser TV show. Only difference is, I don't cry like a baby like most contestants there. :p

Sir Nic Balbuena also taught me a lot of abs workout, stretching and perfecting my kick. Here's a photo of me doing a full round house kick.

With Sir Nic (he's like 5'10" and I'm 5'6" but I almost hit his neck)

Thank you! I hope you guys can train too! :)

So you do Yaw Yan that's why you asked if I had tried it :). Do you still train?

To be honest one of the reasons I never gave it a shot was because I didn't think it'd be as good as muay thai or boxing. But from the video on your post it looks to be a mix of striking and ground already so it seems pretty cool.

Might try it some time just to see if I'll like it.

Hi Malds,

I train occasionally because I still have Zumba, hip hop and definition training. It's pretty similar to Muay Thai but it has a lot of grappling like in wrestling. :)

ok so I just tried it kanina lol. Just finished my first session and it was an exhausting but fun 2 hours :). We did mostly grapling and ground and pound drills, plus the usually strength and conditioning stuff. Maestro said we'd be doing striking next time.

There's a Yaw Yan Gym pala near my place and I only found out because a friend of mine who's renting sa tabing apartment enrolled. It's a jeep away from my place, a lot nearer than even elorde.

I enrolled immediately after hehe, got myself 8 sessions for a month, so twice a week. 2K sya plus 750 membership fee.

I was looking for a workout to fill my mornings and looks like I found one hehe.

@Malds,

Wow you're really open to try any fitness activity eh?! :) That sounds great! I'm glad you enjoyed Yaw-Yan, as you know, you have to use your whole body and mind. Always think quick like when to strike, what combo to use and when to tap out. I'm happy you're happy! Fulfilled! :))

Yup I enjoy anything that's physically challenging :). It's fun and it helps me lose weight.

Plus trying new stuff gives me something to write about. So if it's interesting enough, I'll go out of my way to do it.
